About World Ozone Day
32nd World Ozone Day 2026
The General Assembly of the United Nations (UN), on 23 January 1995, adopted a resolution proclaiming 16 September as the World Ozone Day to commemorate the signing of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer on 16 September 1987. Since then, this day has been celebrated across the world to promote national and global efforts for the protection of the ozone layer.
World Ozone Day is observed every year on 16 September to mark the signing of the Montreal Protocol, which is widely recognized as one of the most successful international environmental treaties ever implemented.
The day is observed by all Parties to the Montreal Protocol in a befitting manner to create awareness among all sections of society about the importance of protecting the ozone layer and encouraging environmentally responsible practices for a healthier planet.
